School Supplies, Construction of a Library, and Teaching English
The Chelly Foundation’s first projects have involved providing books and other school materials to hundreds of children in the village of Snay Ang Chet, and the building of a library on school grounds. Nan made an initial trip to her village in January 2015, when Nan and her brother Ess handed out school books and other supplies.
Later in 2015, Ess took charge of constructing a freestanding one-room library at the village's secondary school. In addition to being stocked with books, the library was built to house computers with connections to the Internet. Additional donations of books are made from time to time.
The Chelly Library was officially dedicated in a ceremony held in January 2016. The library is overseen by three part-time librarians paid for by The Chelly Foundation. In 2017, the Library underwent an expansion to include outdoor seating in the front and on the side of the building, to accommodate all the students who wish to use the facility.
In addition, The Chelly Foundation is also currently funding free English classes to interested students.
Through The Chelly Foundation, our first Chelly Scholar, Manouv, was given a full four year scholarship to attend the University of Phnom Penh beginning in September 2015. The Chelly Foundation has gone on to award an additional nine full scholarships to deserving children from Nan’s village and surrounding hamlets.
